One Tree Planted: Odisha (India) Update

Date: 02/02/2021

Last year, NextEnergy Foundation planted over 38,000 trees across three projects with One Tree Planted. One project centered on alleviating the damage caused by Cyclone Fani in India and involved planting trees to restore the sustainable livelihoods of the small-holder farmers in the state of Odisha.

The project was part of a wider initiative spearheaded by One Tree Planted to plant 1 million fruit trees in India in 2020 to fight hunger. The planting is now complete. Long-term fruit harvesting opportunities have been provided to over 25,000 farmers and villagers across 12 regions, benefiting entire communities by contributing to the local economy. In the coming two years, these trees will sequester 5000 tonnes of carbon, and will provide fruits and fodder leaves to the villagers. Planting mangroves will also help in buffering low lying areas against rising sea levels and increasingly powerful storms as a result of climate change. In total, 1,130,530 trees were planted last year, and the projects have contributed to Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 13 (Climate Action).
