COVID-19 - Open Kitchens
Open Kitchens is a national food solution that brings together restaurants & their communities to fund, produce & deliver free meals to those in need.
NextEnergy Foundation has partnered with Open Kitchens to respond to the increase in food poverty brought about as a side-effect to Covid-19. We are supporting their Holiday Hunger Programme in Nottingham. The Programme will provide 10,000 children across Nottingham with two meals per week for five weeks across their summer holidays (27th July-31st August 2020). Open Kitchens will work with school networks in Nottingham to identify the most vulnerable children and invite parents to collect the meals from existing Open Kitchen hubs across the city.
Project Update: With NextEnergy Foundation’s donation, 10,000 meals will be prepared by eight Nottingham-based restaurant and hotel kitchens. Alongside the distribution of these meals, Open Kitchens ran some activity days in conjunction with Nottingham Forest Community Trust & The Greenwood Academies Trust. Over the summer there were almost 500 children whom local schools identified as suitable for this sort of support. At the end of each event the children took home 2 meals each plus a drink, fruit, snack and activity book from FareShare Midlands.
NextEnergy Foundation (NEF) partnered with Open Kitchens in August 2020 to support their Holiday Hunger Programme in Nottingham.
50% of the budget which had originally been set aside for the NextEnergy Capital London office Christmas 2020 festivities is being utilised to prepare and distribute food parcels to marginalised elderly and vulernable students across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. The parcels contain brand cooking sauces, vegetables, fruit, ambient products and a few festive treats.
Together with additional support from NEF, over 1,700 food parcels are being prepared and delivered by Open Kitchens, in conjunction with FareShare Midlands, over December 2020 and January and February 2021.
Project Update: Open Kitchens has now finished delivering food parcels with NEF’s support. In total, 1,780 food parcels were delivered to 740 children and 50 elderly individuals across 4 regions of the UK. This equates to 52,500 meals and 52 tonnes CO2 emissions avoided by distributing surplus food which would have otherwise gone to a landfill. This is a tremendous achievement!
